Silky Florentine Hand-Engraved Star Bead Set Moissanite Ring

Level: Intermediate. Must be comfortable with torch and have good hand skills

Class Description: 

Learning to hand-engrave doesn’t have to start with complex scrolls and elaborate patterns. A simple silky finish is just the elegance your work needs to bring it to the next level. A star bead setting can be a beautiful element that adds glimmer and shine around a simple stone.

In this class you will learn this basic florentine engraving technique andtostar bead set a 2mm sparkling faceted moissanite on a 6mm sterling silver flat band.

This is a technique heavy class on the florentine engraving technique and star bead setting. The class will demonstrate a finished ring.

  • Moissanite three precision cut -2mm rds (Order extra for practice or loss.)

  • Silver stock 6x2mm flat, 3” minimum. (Order extra for practice.)

  • Hard Silver Solder

Tools:

  • Liner graver

  • 60º graver

  • Onglette graver

  • Quick Change Handle and 3 collets

  • Beading Tool 

Personal Expendables:

  • Blade Butter sample

  • Sanding Sponge sample

Studio Sundries Kit: $75

Studio Sundries Kit Includes:

Bits, Burs and Expendables:

  • 1mm Drill bit

  • 1.5mm Ball Bur

  • 1.8mm bud bur

  • 2mm setting bur

  • Sand paper rolls in 320 & 400

  • Grey pumice abrasive wheel with mandrel

  • 3M Radial Disc light green Bristle Wheel stack of 3 with mandrel

  • Rubber inside ring cylinder polisher in green


Equipment you need in your studio to complete project:

  • Bench pin

  • Ring Clamp or rotating ball vise

  • Flat hand file 0 cut or slightly finer.

  • Butane torch or tank torch set up (silversmith torch, orca torch, little torch, etc.)

  • Soldering surface (charcoal block, solderite, Space Tile, etc.)

  • Flux

  • Soldering pick

  • Fine tweezers

  • Pickle pot

  • Flex Shaft or rotary tool that takes 3/32 bits (if you are buying Studio Sundries Kit the burs and bits are all 3/32.)

  • Scribe to mark metal

  • Ruler (small) or good straight edge 

  • Steel Ring Mandrel

  • Rawhide or Derlin mallet

  • Saw Frame and 1/0, 2/0 or 3/0 blades.

  • Bench block or anvil

  • Eye Protection

Optional equipment:

  • Inside Ring Stamps for metal fineness

  • Brass Maker Stamp holder

  • Ring Bender or Magic Pliers

  • Diamond Silicone Wheels for sharpening or diamond sharpening plates

  • Sanding Sticks


Additional Class Comments:

Gravers in the Tool Kit will be pre-shaped and polished for use. The Materials and Tool Kit is optional BUT it is important to have correct type of gravers as well as properly prepared gravers for this project. I won’t spend a ton of time on sharpening or shaping the gravers in the workshop.

OPTIONAL: If you want to set diamonds in the SAME EXACT SIZE, you can provide and use those instead of moissanite.
